Kings Lesson 7 – God Punishes Judah (2 Kings 21-25)

1. What things did Manasseh do to disobey the law of God and sin against him?

Manasseh rebuilt all the high places to worship false gods that the Canaanites worshipped. He built altars to worship the sun and the moon and the stars and he built them in the Temple in Jerusalem! He used all kinds of ways to find out the future and prophecies that were forbidden. He also sacrificed his son to one of these gods. He was the worst and most wicked king ever in the history of Israel and Judah.

2. What did God promise to bring if Israel did not keep God’s law?

In Deuteronomy 28-29, God promises to bring covenant curses on the people if they broke their covenant with him. This included famine, enemies, lack of water and food, and finally being taken out of the land into exile.

3. How many Babylonian deportations were there?

What was taken in each deportation? There were 3 deportations that happened in 605BC, 597 BC, and 586 BC. In the first deportation, Daniel and the young men who showed promise were taken to Babylon. In the second deportation, the items in the Temple and the prophet Ezekiel was taken to Babylon. In the last deportation, the temple was destroyed, Jerusalem was set on fire, and the walls were destroyed.

4. At the end of 2 Kings, how is Israel given a glimmer of hope?

Jehoiachin (also called Jeconiah), was released from a prison in Babylon to come and sit at the King’s table. This would have given Israel hope to know that a king from the line of David was still alive and that there was still hope that the exile would end.

5. What does this teach us about who God is?

This story shows us that disobedience to God always leads to death. Likewise, obedience to God leads to life and blessing. God was faithful to keep his covenant promises to his people to bring blessing and to bring judgment. God is holy and just and he cannot allow those who break his law to go unpunished, especially in a covenant.

6. How does this point us to the perfect King Jesus?

This story points us to Jesus showing he is the one who will redeem us from exile. We were captive to Satan and sin and Jesus delivers his people from those things. Jesus took the punishment of the law for us and took the curse on himself (Gal 3). Jesus is the perfect King from the line of David but does not have the curse of Jeconiah because his true father was God.
