1. When King Nebuchadnezzar dreamed again, how did he find out what it meant?

The king brought all the wise men together to tell him both the dream and the interpretation. And, just like in Daniel 2, only Daniel could do what the king asked. Through Daniel’s God, Yahweh, could Daniel know about the dream and what it meant. Only God has this wisdom and knowledge.

2. Who was King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream about? What did it say would happen?

It was about him! He was the big tree. He was the tree that animals found shade under. He was the one about which the angel said “chop down, but leave the stump.” God revealed to Daniel that the tree symbolized Nebuchadnezzar. God was going to bring judgment on the king, take the kingdom from him, and give him a crazy mind like an animal. But, God would give him hope that his kingdom would be given back to him.

3. Was Daniel afraid to tell the king what the dream meant? Why or why not?

Absolutely! Daniel was most likely afraid for himself, he was afraid for the other wise men, and he was afraid for Nebuchadnezzar! The most powerful man in the world made crazy? The most powerful man’s kingdom being taken away from him? There would be so much turmoil that would happen because of this.

4. How long did it take for God’s prophecy to happen? How long did Nebuchadnezzar act like an animal?

It took a year, but God was faithful to his promises. When Nebuchadnezzar was at the height of his pride, God gave him the mind of an animal and took the kingdom from him. Nebuchadnezzar was already acting like a ‘beast’ by the way he ruled with wickedness and sin before, but now God was going to humble him. Nebuchadnezzar acted this way for a full ‘Seven periods of time.’

5. What did Nebuchadnezzar learn about God from this? What should it teach us?

Nebuchadnezzar realized that he wasn’t as powerful as he thought he was. He needed to be humbled, for his good and for God’s glory. God humbled him, and then Nebuchadnezzar humbled himself. God judged him to show him mercy. God is sovereign over all kingdoms and kings, he’s in control of everything, and he is able to humble those who are proud. It should teach us to trust God is in control, and that we should humble ourselves and trust that God is the one that is worthy of worship and praise.

6. How does this story teach us about King Jesus?

This story points us to a better King. Unlike Nebuchadnezzar, Jesus humbled himself. Jesus was obedient to his Father’s will, all the way to the cross. Jesus could have taken all the kingdoms of the world from Satan, but he chose to obey his Father. He knew that at the right time, God would exalt him and give him the name that is above every name (Phil 2:8-11). Unlike Nebuchadnezzar, Jesus has a kingdom coming that will never be destroyed. Jesus has a kingdom that will one day fill the whole earth (Matt 13:31-32), and all the nations will find shade under his rule. One day, Jesus, the righteous King, will rule, and there will never be anything that he needs to repent and turn from. He is perfect, he is righteous, he is King!
